Buryatia

IMG_0027

Buryatia is a republic of the Russian Federation in south-eastern Siberia. Buryatia has a rustic beauty and even contains the world’s cleanest and largest body of fresh water lake Baikal on its western border. Buryats honour Baikal as a holy lake connected with traditional beliefs in Buddhism and shamanism, which still carries importance for many of the inhabitants. There are also the snowy mountains of Sayany and large wooded areas covered by taiga.

Buryatian culture and language are closely related to the Halha-Mongolians, the “inner Mongolians”, the largest ethnic group in modern day Mongolia. Buryatia exists within the Orthodox Christian Russia and nearby Muslim countries, but is still one of three Buddhist republics in Russia. To be more precise, Buryatia is a Buddhist-Shaman republic that has its own distinct culture.
The size of Buryatia is close to that of Germany but its population is only around 980.000 while Germany’s population is more than 82 million people. This may give you an idea of how vast and sparsely populated Buryatia is.

BuryatiaSummerSchool.org project takes place in villages of Zakamensky district, one of 21 districts of Buryatia. Zakamensky district consists of 23 villages and one town – Zakamensk, the administrative center of the district. There is 1 school in each village and about 5 in the town. Volunteers are welcome to visit Buryatia and teach in one of the schools. The decision on volunteers’ placement will be taken by schools itself depending on their availability and schedule.

The Summer School session 2012 will take place in Khamney village of Zakamensky district of Buryatia republic of Russia.
