Khamney

Khamney village is situated in Zakamensky district of Buryatia. The village was founded in 1730 by Russian kazaks from Kaluga region of Russia who came to Khamney to protect the Southern Siberian border of Russia. Though the name of the village comes from Evenk word “khamni” meaning rocks. In 18th century few families of Sartul ethnic group came to settle down in Khamney area.
Being from its early history multicultural and diverse, today Khamney populates 800 people (census 2010) amongst which are Buryats, slavic Russians, Kazakhs, Tatars, Komi and even one family of Russian Germans (RusslandDeutsche).

The local Buryat beliefs are shamanism and Buddhism. Khamney is surrounded by springs and spiritual places that locals believe to be holy and healing.
