Mikhaylovka

IMG_0012Mikhaylovka has a population of around 1000 residents, half of them Slavic Russian, the other half Buryats.

It’s a relatively big village compare to the other villages in the district. On this photo you can see that Mikhaylovka is surrounded by beautiful hills. Hiking lovers will find plenty of opportunities to hike around the village.

The Summer School sessions 2009 and 2010took place in Mikhaylovka with volunteers from Austria, Canada, Germany, Malaysia, Portugal, Poland, Russia and Switzerland. More photos from Mikhaylovka - here.

There is one school with about 300 students. The children have never been abroad, nor can they even imagine travelling outside of their own village. The furthest most of them will travel is to the capital of Buryatia, Ulan-Ude, which is a six hour car ride or about 350 km from the village.
The aim of Buryatia Volunteer School is to promote education opportunities among local children, but I also hope that volunteering here will also broaden your mind.
This is the belief behind our School – “Make change – educate yourself and others”.

BuryatiaSummerSchool.org project takes place in villages of Zakamensky district, one of 21 districts of Buryatia. Zakamensky district consists of 23 villages and one town – Zakamensk, the administrative center of the district. There is 1 school in each village and about 5 in the town. Volunteers are welcome to visit Buryatia and teach at one of the schools at any time of a year and for as long as they want (few days, weeks or months). The decision on volunteers’ placement will be taken by schools itself depending on their availability and schedule. View a map.
